This November 30, The PA Breast Cancer Coalition will join hundreds of nonprofits, organizations and businesses in Lancaster County for the Extraordinary Give.

So, what is this whole Extraordinary Give thing, anyway? It’s a 24-hour online giving marathon hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation during which the PA Breast Cancer Coalition has an opportunity to raise thousands of dollars to support women and families in Pennsylvania. Beginning at midnight, November 30, anyone in the world can log on to ExtraGive.org, search for the PBCC and give a donation of $25 or more. During that time, the Community Foundation will choose donors for special incentives. For example, during the “Midnight Madness” hours of 12am – 3am, the Foundation will select a donor at random and throw in a little “Extra” to whichever organization that person chose to support. Will YOU Give to the PBCC?

If you’re undecided, we’ve chosen the Top 5 Reasons why you should consider it:

1. All of the money will stay right here in Pennsylvania. $.83 of every dollar we receive goes to support our programs and services.

2. The need is great. 32 women in Pennsylvania will be diagnosed with breast cancer TODAY and more than 12,000 will be diagnosed this year.

3. Research. Scientists and doctors in PA are breaking ground on possible new treatments every day, but they cannot continue their work without funding from nonprofits like the PBCC.

4. Advocacy. There are no questions too big or too small. The PBCC staff works to find the answers, treatments and resources for women every day.

5. Because we need to find a cure now. Each one of our programs at the PBCC supports that mission. From our Friends Like Me Care Packages to our Refunds for Research program, the PBCC relies strongly on contributions from the community to continue our work.

For 20 years, we have been fortunate to have generous donors, volunteers and Grassroots Partners. The PBCC has set an Extraordinary Give goal of $3,200 – $100 for each woman in PA diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Help us continue our mission for the next 20 years by setting aside a little “Extra” and participating in this year’s Extraordinary Give on November 30!

Bats, boas and Barnstormers: Lancaster teams Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer®

What a perfect way to wrap up derby season 2012! 15 teams and 2 individual sluggers battled it out on the field for bragging rights and those coveted pink bats this past Saturday at the home of the Lancaster Barnstormers. After a rain-out earlier this month, our dedicated batters and volunteers showed their support yet again with an incredible turnout. In the end, “Guns of Roses Team 1″ from the Lancaster Police Department secured the top spot with 1,560 points. The group enters the derby each year to support their co-worker, Judy, a breast cancer survivor of two years. The day’s highest individual score went to Greg Gunter of Team UTI who smashed two homers over the Clipper Magazine Stadium fence and racked up 535 points!

Batters of all ages step up to the plate in Altoona

On Wednesday, July 25, batters, fans and a plethora of volunteers came out to the Peoples Natural Gas Field, home of the Altoona Curve, to participate in the second-to-last home run derby of the season. Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer® at the Altoona Curve started out with a group of “little sluggers” stepping up to the plate to take their turn at the batting cage. This group, comprised of 3 batters under the age of 15, knocked off the socks of spectators as they made some incredible hits to the outfield and truly held their ground. Look out for this group in the years to come at Altoona!

Thanks to all of our teams, and the groups of volunteers who stayed with us throughout the day to shag balls in the outfield as the sun beat down on them…that’s dedication! We had groups from AT&T, Best Buy, YTI Career Institute and the Altoona Curve Junior. We couldn’t have been there without you, thanks for your support!

Competition Heats Up in Washington

The sun was out as our teams, individual batters and an abundance of volunteers gathered on July 20^th at the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park. The 5^th derby of the season kicked off with local Representatives Brandon Neuman and Robert Matzie going head to head to see which team would claim official bragging rights over the other. They decided that the losing team would have to wear the pink boa on the House floor in order to bring awareness to the Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer® competition. With the help of 8 home runs (7 coming from one batter alone!), Neuman’s Crew won for the second consecutive year, and Rob Matzie will soon be seen publicly in the pink boa, all in the name of breast cancer awareness!

Rain Doesn’t Dampen Batters’ Appetite for Home Runs at the Erie SeaWolves

On Thursday, July 19, the PA Breast Cancer Coalition’s 5th Annual Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer® traveled all the way to Jerry Uht Park in Erie, Pa with 13 teams, 3 individual batters and a handful of energetic volunteers. The day began bright and dry, but gave way to a little rain in the afternoon. That didn’t stop 5 determined batters from rolling up their sleeves and hitting it out of the park for breast cancer! Thanks to everyone who came out to cheer on the teams and to our great volunteers who even stood out in the rain to shag balls and clean up the field with us! Temperatures were rising in Reading, but despite the heat, the First Energy Stadium was the setting of a record-breaking 21 home runs at our third home run derby of the season, including an incredible 8 individual home runs from John Furlong and 5 individual home runs from Kevin Becker. A total of 13 teams and 27 volunteers, along with 3 individual batters came out to the Reading Phillies to Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer^® with the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.

First Home Run of the Season at York Revolution

Sovereign Bank Stadium’s 37.7 foot wall at the York Revolution didn’t stop our batters from hitting it out of the park at the Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer® home run derby on Thursday, July 12. A total of 12 teams and 20 volunteers helped make our second home run derby of the season a huge success; AND we found our first home run hitter, Brad McCullough of PeoplesBank Team 3, at the event. Congratulations to Brad for his home run and high score of 525 points!

Attention Lancaster Barnstormers volunteers & participants: today’s derby has been cancelled due to weather. The event has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 28th. Batting timeslots will remain the same and volunteering shifts will also remain the same. Thank you!

Will We See You at the Plate or in the Outfield?

As the weather heats up so does anticipation for the PBCC’s 5^th annual Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer® home run derby! This July we will be traveling to eight minor league ballparks across the state allowing local teams and individuals an opportunity to “take their swing” and raise awareness and funds to support the fight against breast cancer. As the number of participants continues to grow so has our need for volunteers at each location.

In 2011 we had over 220 volunteers sign up to help make the home run derby possible. This summer we are looking for outfield shaggers to round-up balls and once again make each event a success. Volunteers will have the opportunity to experience being on a minor league field, enjoy a day outside and spend a few hours being part of a great cause. All we ask is that you don’t mind being out in the sun and on your feet; being able to catch or throw a ball is not necessary!

We can use volunteers at all locations, but we are most in need of volunteers at Harrisburg, Erie, Washington, Williamsport and Altoona. Remember, this could be a fun family activity to do with the kids or a break from the daily grind if your employer offers a volunteer incentive program! Gearing Up to Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer

Excitement is building across the state in anticipation of the PBCC’s Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer® home run derby, taking place at eight minor league ballparks this July! New this year is an online fundraising component which allows teams and individuals an opportunity to raise awareness of their journey to the derby while raising funds to support the PBCC’s mission at the same time. Register today!

What do you get for stepping up to the plate? Each batter gets 15 swings for a chance to score big. Batters earn 100 points for home runs and fewer points for hits to the infield. Prizes are awarded to the team at each stadium that earns the highest number of points and to the individual batter who earns the most out of all individuals in the state. Everyone walks away a winner with a batter’s jersey, program, souvenir team photo, goody bag, and an overall great experience for a good cause!

We are shooting for a goal of raising $100,000 through the Home Run Derby this year and need YOUR help to get there. If you want to step up to the plate as a batter, register today.
